Cable One Takes on Major Debt to Acquire Vyve Broadband

The regional ISP is borrowing about $700 million to take full control of Vyve Broadband, intensifying the consolidation of rural U.S. internet networks.

Cable One is taking on approximately $700 million in new borrowing to acquire the remaining 55% of Mega Broadband Investments, the parent company of Vyve Broadband. Cable One already owns 45% of the business. If completed, the transaction will give it full control of a regional broadband operator serving rural communities across 16 states.

The deal is significant because it combines a major ISP acquisition with a sizeable increase in debt at a time when regional broadband companies are under pressure to invest in fiber, improve networks and compete with cable, fixed wireless and satellite providers.

What Cable One announced

Cable One is moving toward full ownership of Mega Broadband Investments, which operates under the Vyve Broadband brand. The company expects the transaction to complete in the fourth quarter of 2026, with 1 October 2026 identified as the anticipated closing date in its transaction materials.

Why Cable One wants the deal

The acquisition gives Cable One a chance to capture the benefits of full ownership, but it also places more responsibility on the company to improve the business and manage its debt.

1

More control over network investment

Cable One can set Vyve’s upgrade priorities without sharing strategic decisions with a minority partner.

2

Greater rural scale

A larger operating footprint may improve purchasing power, engineering efficiency and the rollout of newer broadband technologies.

3

More bundled-service opportunities

Vyve’s broadband, fiber, video and voice assets give Cable One more ways to package services for households and businesses.

4

Potential long-term growth

If Cable One can increase broadband take-up and improve network performance, the acquired footprint could support future revenue growth.

The main risks

Higher leverageDebt raises the execution pressure

Cable One must generate enough cash flow to service its existing obligations while funding network upgrades.

Rural economicsRural networks can be expensive to upgrade

Lower customer density can make fiber construction and maintenance more difficult to justify financially.

CompetitionFixed wireless and satellite remain active rivals

Vyve competes with cable, fiber, 5G home broadband and satellite services in different markets.

Customer outcomesFull ownership does not guarantee better service

Customers will judge the deal by availability, reliability, speeds, prices and support after integration.

What it could mean for Vyve customers

No immediate change to customer prices, packages or service has been announced. In the short term, customers should expect the existing Vyve brand and services to continue while the transaction moves toward closing.

Over time, full ownership could support more coordinated network upgrades or new product offers. It could also lead to changes in branding, billing, support systems or service plans. Those decisions have not yet been detailed by Cable One.

The practical test will be network investment

The acquisition will be judged by whether Cable One converts its larger footprint into better availability, reliability and value for rural customers.

What the deal says about U.S. broadband

Cable One’s move is part of a wider consolidation trend in U.S. broadband. Regional providers are seeking scale to spread the cost of fiber, network software, customer support and capacity upgrades across more homes and businesses.

Consolidation can provide the capital and scale needed to modernize rural infrastructure, but it can also reduce the number of independent operators competing in local markets. Regulators and customers will therefore pay attention to both investment promises and competitive effects.

The bottom line

Cable One’s plan to take full control of Vyve Broadband gives it a larger rural network platform, but the $700 million borrowing also raises the stakes. The deal could support better coordination and future broadband investment if integration goes well. The clearest evidence will be what customers see in network upgrades, service quality and pricing after the transaction closes.
