gFiber Upgrades 22,000 Customers to 3 Gig at No Extra Cost
More than 22,000 existing 2 Gig customers are getting a free move to symmetrical Home 3 Gig service.
gFiber is giving more than 22,000 existing 2 Gig customers an extra gigabit of symmetrical speed without charging them more. The company says eligible customers are being moved automatically to Home 3 Gig, with no request, plan change or customer action required.
What gFiber announced
gFiber says the upgrade is aimed at long-standing customers who adopted its earlier 2 Gig tier. Instead of leaving those customers on an older product while newer plans move forward, the provider is increasing their speed automatically.
The move takes eligible customers from 2 Gbps download and upload capacity to the company’s Home 3 Gig tier, giving them 50% more headline bandwidth without increasing their monthly bill.
Why gFiber can make the upgrade now
The provider says the upgrade is possible because it has been modernizing the underlying fiber network, including moving about 90% of its footprint to 25G PON.
25G PON gives gFiber much more shared capacity on the passive optical network than older generations. That extra headroom makes it easier to offer higher retail speed tiers without rebuilding the access network every time the product lineup changes.
That does not mean every customer receives 25 Gbps. The 25G figure describes the access-network platform, while individual households still receive the specific retail tier attached to their account.
gFiber has already been pushing multi-gig service further into the home with Wi-Fi 7 hardware on its higher tiers. If you want the current plan ladder and monthly prices, see our Google Fiber and gFiber price tracker.
What an extra gigabit actually changes
Moving from 2 Gig to 3 Gig will not make every website load 50% faster. Many everyday tasks are limited by the destination server, Wi-Fi conditions or the device itself long before a 2 Gbps connection is fully used.
The extra capacity matters most when several high-bandwidth activities happen at the same time, or when a household regularly moves very large files.
Creators sending high-resolution video, cloud backups or large work files can make better use of symmetrical multi-gig upload capacity.
Several people can stream, download, upload and work at once with more capacity available before the connection itself becomes the bottleneck.
Computers, home labs and network storage with 2.5G or faster Ethernet are better positioned to use the additional bandwidth.
Compatible newer devices can get much closer to multi-gig wireless performance than older Wi-Fi hardware, although real speeds still depend on range and interference.
For most homes, 3 Gig is far beyond what ordinary browsing and streaming require. Our broadband speed guide explains how much bandwidth typical households actually use.
The bigger story is the no-cost upgrade
The unusual part of this announcement is not simply that gFiber can sell 3 Gig internet. It is that the provider is moving existing customers to the faster tier automatically instead of reserving the better product for new sign-ups or charging an upgrade fee.
The customer keeps the same service relationship and monthly charge.
Eligible accounts are moved to Home 3 Gig without needing to contact support.
The customer gains an extra gigabit of symmetrical capacity without a higher monthly rate.
That fits gFiber’s wider strategy of emphasizing straightforward pricing, no annual contracts and no data caps. The provider has also upgraded customers in selected markets before, including its multi-gig rollout in Des Moines.
More gFiber speed upgrades are coming
gFiber says this 22,000-customer group is only the first phase. The company is continuing network upgrades across its footprint and says faster speeds will reach more customers as that work is completed.
The current announcement covers existing subscribers who can already be moved to Home 3 Gig.
gFiber is completing upgrades across the rest of its footprint rather than switching every market simultaneously.
gFiber has not published a final customer count or date for the next wave, so availability remains address- and market-specific.
The change is another step in a longer multi-gig strategy that dates back to Google Fiber’s original push to make gigabit broadband mainstream. Our Google Fiber history tracks how that strategy evolved into today’s gFiber network.
Eligible gFiber 2 Gig customers are being upgraded automatically to symmetrical Home 3 Gig. There is no extra charge, no request required, and gFiber says this is only the first phase of a wider rollout.
