WHEN DID GOOGLE FIBER START?
Google Fiber started on February 10, 2010, when Google announced plans for an experimental fiber network capable of delivering internet speeds of up to 1Gbps.
The idea was not only to sell faster internet. Google wanted to test what communities, developers, schools, businesses and households would do when broadband speed stopped being the main limitation.
The company also wanted to explore better ways to build fiber networks and test a different model for home broadband.
WHY THE 2010 ANNOUNCEMENT STILL MATTERS

The project later expanded across the state line to Kansas City, Missouri. Google officially launched residential Google Fiber service in the Kansas City area in July 2012.
Kansas City became the proof point. Instead of talking about theoretical gigabit internet, Google Fiber gave consumers a real product with real prices, real installation appointments and real neighborhood demand.
The launch also introduced the idea of fiberhoods. Neighborhoods had to reach a registration target before construction moved forward. That model created local excitement and helped Google decide where to build first.
WHY DID GOOGLE FIBER PAUSE EXPANSION?
Google Fiber grew beyond Kansas City, but building fiber networks was expensive and slow. New fiber construction requires permits, utility coordination, pole access, trenching, crews and long-term capital.
In 2016, Google Fiber paused work in most prospective cities while it reviewed its strategy. This did not mean Google Fiber shut down. Existing markets continued operating, and construction continued in areas where work was already underway.
The pause was a turning point. Google Fiber had proved that customers wanted gigabit service, but it also learned that building a new fiber network city by city was more difficult than simply announcing faster internet.
THE IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Google Fiber paused many future-city plans. It did not abandon customers in its established markets, and it later returned to wider expansion with a more selective strategy.
THE MULTI-GIG COMEBACK
Google Fiber’s next chapter focused on faster products and more disciplined expansion.
In 2020, the provider introduced 2 Gig service. It later announced 5 Gig and 8 Gig plans, giving eligible customers symmetrical multi-gig speeds for demanding homes, creators, gamers, remote workers and small businesses.
In 2022, Google Fiber also returned to broader geographic growth, including new-state expansion and continued construction in existing markets.
This comeback changed the story. Google Fiber was no longer only the company that made 1Gbps internet famous. It became a provider pushing beyond gigabit service while keeping fiber as the core of its network.
IS GOOGLE FIBER NOW GFIBER?
Yes. In March 2026, Google Fiber officially became GFiber.
The new name reflects how the service has evolved. Google Fiber began as an experiment inside Google. GFiber is now a more focused broadband brand built around fiber internet, multi-gig speeds and customer service.
The original name is still important for search and customer recognition. Many people will continue to look for “Google Fiber” even as the official brand shifts to GFiber.
