History of Opus Broadband: From Local ISP to Full-Fibre Network
OPUS BROADBAND • NORTH WEST ENGLAND • FULL FIBRE • ISP HISTORY
Opus Broadband began in 2021 as a North West England broadband venture focused on bringing faster, better-value connectivity to areas that had been poorly served by larger networks.
Since then, the provider has expanded its footprint, built its own network infrastructure and become part of the UK alternative-network story. Its reported interest in TalkTalk’s consumer business has now placed the company in a much larger national spotlight.

How Opus Broadband began
According to Opus Broadband’s own company history, the business was established in 2021. It initially launched in Blackburn and Burnley, in Lancashire, with the aim of offering high-speed internet to businesses and communities in the North West.
The company says its launch focused on places where customers had faced low speeds, high prices or limited competition from traditional fixed-line providers.
Brand history and legal history are different: Opus Broadband describes the broadband brand as starting in 2021. Companies House lists the active legal entity Opus Broadband PLC as incorporated on 7 March 2024.
Expansion across North West England
After its initial Blackburn and Burnley launch, Opus Broadband says it expanded to other locations across the North West, including:
One of the Lancashire locations included in the provider’s expansion.
Coastal Lancashire areas added to the network’s growing footprint.
Further towns listed by Opus Broadband as part of its regional rollout.
The provider says expansion is continuing into additional locations. Availability remains address-specific, so the network’s presence in a town does not guarantee that every property can order service.
What network does Opus Broadband use?
Opus Broadband presents itself as an independent network operator and internet service provider. It says the company and its partners designed and built a network from the ground up rather than simply reselling a national wholesale network.
| Network element | Role in the Opus model |
|---|---|
| Full fibre | Fibre connections designed to deliver high-speed broadband to the property. |
| Fixed wireless | Wireless extensions that can help reach properties where fibre deployment is more difficult. |
| Local infrastructure | Opus says it operates its own GPON fibre network, including poles and ducts in parts of its footprint. |
| Local support | The provider positions direct regional service and engineering support as part of its customer proposition. |
Opus Broadband’s corporate structure
Companies House lists OPUS BROADBAND PLC under company number 15546441, with a registered office in Simonstone, Lancashire. The company is shown as active and was incorporated in March 2024.
Opus Broadband Topco Limited is also listed as an active company. Public company records should be checked separately from marketing pages because brand names, holding companies and operating companies do not always share the same incorporation date.
Do not confuse the names: OPUS TELECOM LIMITED is a separate Companies House record and is shown as dissolved. It should not automatically be treated as the legal entity behind today’s Opus Broadband brand.
Why Opus Broadband is now attracting national attention
Opus Broadband was initially known mainly for its regional network and local broadband proposition. That changed when reports emerged that the company had made an offer for TalkTalk’s consumer business.
The reported proposal, understood to be worth around £100m, would represent a major step beyond Opus Broadband’s original regional focus. However, no acquisition has been completed and the reported offer remains part of an ongoing process.
What could happen next?
Regional rollout
Opus Broadband can continue expanding its own network across the North West and nearby markets.
Service development
The company says it wants to improve customer choice and add services as its network grows.
TalkTalk decision
The outcome of the reported TalkTalk proposal will determine whether Opus takes on a much larger retail operation.
For now, Opus Broadband’s history is best understood as the story of a regional independent ISP that grew by building its own infrastructure in areas where customers wanted more competition.
