Lumen Technologies has launched Lumen Intelligent Internet, an enterprise connectivity service designed to make bandwidth easier to buy, scale and manage as AI and cloud traffic becomes less predictable.

Customers can control supported connections through Lumen Connect or APIs, scale capacity up or down, and choose between on-demand hourly pricing and term-based pricing. Lumen says the service is available at more than 10 million U.S. business locations and can scale as high as 100 Gbps, depending on the location and network setup.

What Lumen Intelligent Internet actually changes

Enterprise internet has traditionally been bought around a fixed amount of capacity. A company estimates its busiest periods, orders enough bandwidth to cover that expected peak and then pays for the connection even when traffic falls.

Lumen is trying to make that model more flexible. Intelligent Internet builds on its Network-as-a-Service platform so eligible customers can change bandwidth digitally rather than treating every capacity adjustment as a long provisioning project.

01

Buy and activate connectivity digitally

Lumen says businesses can use Lumen Connect to order and manage supported services, with activation possible in minutes once the required network setup is in place.

02

Increase capacity when traffic rises

Customers can scale bandwidth for AI jobs, cloud migrations, analytics, product launches, major events or other periods when normal traffic assumptions no longer fit.

03

Reduce capacity when the peak passes

The service is designed to let businesses scale back instead of permanently paying for a peak bandwidth level that may only be needed at certain times.

04

Manage the connection through software

Lumen Connect and API access move more of the network-management process into a programmable interface rather than relying entirely on manual carrier changes.

This is not a new residential Lumen internet plan. Intelligent Internet is being sold as enterprise connectivity for businesses, distributed locations, cloud environments and data-heavy workloads.

Bandwidth can scale from small connections to 100 Gbps

Lumen’s service page says Intelligent Internet supports bandwidth from 1 Mbps up to 100 Gbps for existing Lumen Fabric Ports. That is an unusually wide range because the same platform is intended to cover backup connectivity, ordinary business use and very high-capacity enterprise workloads.

A much wider bandwidth range than a typical small-business planThese points illustrate publicly listed service tiers and the stated maximum, not a promise that every speed is available at every address.
1 MbpsLow-bandwidth backup option
50 MbpsLighter business connectivity
1 GbpsData-heavy business applications
10 GbpsHigh-volume enterprise traffic

Maximum bandwidth and self-service options depend on the location, Lumen network configuration and whether the required Fabric Port or NaaS infrastructure is available.

Why Lumen is tying the launch to AI traffic

The interesting part of the launch is not simply that Lumen can sell a fast internet circuit. Dedicated enterprise connections at multi-gigabit speeds already exist. The change is the attempt to make capacity behave more like cloud computing: customers can increase or reduce what they use as demand changes.

That matters for AI because network demand does not always follow the old pattern of employee headcount, office size and predictable daytime application use. Training, inference, data movement, cloud synchronization and automated systems can create sudden bursts that are much harder to forecast months in advance.

37% of enterprises in IDC research cited by Lumen said their bandwidth needs had grown by more than 50% year over year. Lumen also cited 29% struggling to align networks with AI workloads.

Light Reading’s September 25 coverage pushed the argument further: Lumen executives are preparing for a world in which automated agents, rather than people, can become major generators of enterprise network traffic. That does not mean every company will suddenly need 100 Gbps. It means the old method of estimating bandwidth from staff and office usage may become less reliable for some organizations.

The wider telecom market is already spending heavily around the same trend. Verizon, for example, has agreed to provide dedicated fiber capacity for Google data centers, another sign that AI infrastructure is creating new demand for long-haul and data-center fiber.

How Lumen Intelligent Internet pricing works

Lumen is offering two broad approaches: hourly on-demand pricing and term-based pricing. The hourly model is designed for customers that want to turn capacity up and down without committing to a single fixed bandwidth level. Term-based pricing is available for organizations that want a predictable monthly commitment but still need the option to scale above it.

Publicly listed optionStarting priceLumen’s stated useWhat to know
Backup — 1 Mbps$0.30/hourOperational redundancyA low-bandwidth backup tier rather than a normal primary business connection.
50 Mbps$0.37/hourSmaller businesses and lighter web applicationsEntry-level on-demand capacity on Lumen’s public pricing page.
100 Mbps$0.47/hourSmaller businesses and lighter applicationsAnother publicly listed hourly tier.
1 Gbps$1.06/hourMedium to large businesses and richer applicationsUseful where substantially more throughput is needed.
10 Gbps$3.93/hourLarge businesses with data-intensive trafficLumen lists this as an on-demand high-capacity option.

Prices above are the starting hourly rates shown by Lumen on September 26, 2026. Lumen also offers term-based pricing, and final availability, configuration and pricing depend on the customer’s location and service setup. Lumen advertises service up to 100 Gbps but does not list a universal public hourly price for every possible bandwidth level.

For companies that simply need a conventional office connection rather than elastic enterprise networking, it still makes sense to compare ordinary business internet options before moving into a Network-as-a-Service model.

AI is only one use case

Lumen is marketing Intelligent Internet around the AI era, but the service is broader than AI. Any business with large swings in network demand could potentially benefit from capacity that is easier to resize.

AI and analytics

Training data, model inference, large datasets and analytics jobs can create high-volume transfers that do not follow normal office traffic patterns.

Cloud migration

Moving applications or datasets between sites and cloud platforms can temporarily require much more bandwidth than day-to-day operations.

Events and seasonal peaks

Venues, retailers and businesses with concentrated busy periods can scale capacity for the peak rather than running at that level all year.

Multi-site networks

Digital provisioning can simplify how distributed organizations manage internet capacity across locations where the service is available.

Launch customer example

Lumen points to the New York Yankees as a practical example. Stadium bandwidth needs rise sharply on game days and fall when the venue is closed, making variable capacity easier to understand than an abstract AI workload. The same underlying idea is to match bandwidth more closely to actual demand.

AI infrastructure is also increasing connectivity demand farther upstream. Large data-center projects need substantial fiber capacity between facilities and cloud regions. Our coverage of Meta’s planned $9.1 billion Canada AI data center explains why large compute campuses can become drivers of new regional and long-haul network investment.

What the launch does not mean

Not residential broadband

This is an enterprise service. Lumen is not announcing a new 100 Gbps home internet plan for consumers.

Not 100 Gbps everywhere

The 100 Gbps figure is the service’s stated upper range. Actual speeds and self-service options depend on the address and Lumen network configuration.

Not exclusively for AI

AI is a major marketing and engineering driver, but Lumen also lists cloud migration, analytics, seasonal demand and network modernization as use cases.

Not automatically cheaper

Elastic capacity can reduce the need to pay permanently for a peak connection, but whether it lowers total cost depends on usage patterns, committed bandwidth, location and pricing.

Lumen also offers DDoS Essentials and Lumen Defender as security options for Intelligent Internet. Those features can add network-level protection, but businesses still need their own endpoint, identity, application and cloud security controls.

The bottom line

Lumen Intelligent Internet is less about inventing a new kind of internet connection and more about changing how enterprise bandwidth is bought and controlled. Businesses can provision service digitally, adjust supported capacity as demand moves and choose between hourly flexibility and longer-term pricing.

The AI angle matters because automated workloads can make network demand harder to predict, but the same model also fits cloud migrations, events and other uneven traffic patterns. The question now is whether enough enterprises prefer elastic connectivity over conventional fixed-capacity circuits to make this model a larger part of the U.S. business internet market.
