How to Move From Virgin Media Email to Gmail or Outlook

How to Move Virgin Media Email to Gmail or Outlook (2026)

MOVE OLD EMAILS • EXPORT CONTACTS • CHANGE IMPORTANT LOGINS • CHECK BEFORE CLOSURE

Quick answer

Move your data first, then change the accounts that still depend on the old address

Create the Gmail or Outlook.com address you want to keep long term, export your Virgin Media contacts, copy or import the messages you need, then change the email address used by banks, utilities, shopping accounts, subscriptions and recovery services.

Do this while you still have access to the source mailbox. Virgin Media says mailbox contents are permanently deleted when an account closes. If you are still deciding whether to leave the address behind at all, read our guide to Virgin Media’s email closure and Junara migration first.

First check where your mailbox is hosted now

Virgin Media is moving users to Junara in phases, so two people with the same type of legacy address may currently need different server details.

Still on Virgin Media Mail Use Virgin Media’s current IMAP/POP settings and a Virgin Media Mail app password when a third-party mail app asks for credentials.
Already moved to Junara Use Junara’s current IMAP settings instead. Do not keep using the old Virgin Media server details after the mailbox has transferred.

If you can no longer access the mailbox after receiving migration emails, do not assume a Gmail or Outlook setting is the problem. Virgin Media says users who missed their migration deadline may need to contact Virgin Media. See our guide to what happens if you miss the Virgin Media Junara deadline.

Before you start

Create the destination firstSet up the Gmail or Outlook.com account you actually want to keep and secure it with recovery details and two-step verification.
Keep the old mailbox accessibleDo not deliberately close or remove the old account before you have copied the messages, attachments and contacts you need.
Export contacts separatelyVirgin Media webmail can export the address book as CSV. Keep that file until you have confirmed the contacts imported correctly.

If the mailbox is still on Virgin Media Mail, open the Address Book on desktop, choose the menu, select Export and then CSV. Virgin Media also lets you include distribution lists in that export.

Want to keep the old address instead?

You do not have to move away completely. Eligible users can keep an existing Virgin Media-domain address through Junara. If the address matters more than avoiding another email subscription, compare our Junara email pricing guide. If you specifically use an @ntlworld.com address, see whether you can keep your NTLworld email address.

GMAIL

How to move Virgin Media email to Gmail

Create or sign in to the Gmail account you want to keep

Use the final Gmail address you intend to give to banks, utilities and other important services. It is easier to migrate once than to repeat the process later.

Use Gmail’s one-time mail and contacts import if your source mailbox is compatible

On Gmail in a desktop browser, open Settings → See all settings → Accounts and Import → Import mail and contacts, then follow Google’s prompts.

Google still supports this one-time import in 2026. It is different from the old continuous Check mail from other accounts POP feature. Google says new continuous POP setups stopped being supported after Q1 2026, while existing setups are due to stop in January 2027.

If Gmail asks for Virgin Media POP details, use the current Virgin Media settings

For mailboxes that are still hosted by Virgin Media, the current POP server is pop3.virginmedia.com, using SSL on port 995. The username is the full Virgin Media email address and the password is the separate Virgin Media Mail app password.

Gmail’s web import does not preserve source folders or labels. If folder structure matters, use an IMAP-capable desktop client instead of relying only on Gmail’s one-time importer.

Import your contacts into Google Contacts

Open Google Contacts on a computer, choose Import, select the CSV file exported from Virgin Media and start the import. Check a few important entries before deleting the backup CSV.

Check old messages and attachments before moving on

Search for a few known senders, older messages and attachments. Imported messages stay in Gmail, but the original mailbox remains a separate service until it closes or you stop using it.

Do not build a 2026 migration around permanent Gmail POP fetching. Use one-time import for compatible mailboxes, or use an IMAP-capable email client to copy the messages you need. Then change important services to the new Gmail address.

Already on Junara? Junara documents mailbox download through IMAP-capable clients. For a Junara-hosted mailbox, use Junara’s current server details rather than Virgin Media’s POP settings; the Outlook route below is usually the clearer way to copy a large or folder-heavy mailbox.

OUTLOOK

How to move Virgin Media email to Outlook

Outlook for Windows is useful for this job because Microsoft supports adding multiple email accounts and moving or copying messages between folders. The important first step is to add the correct source mailbox using the settings for whoever hosts it now.

Mailbox status Incoming server Port / security Outgoing server Password
Still on Virgin Media imap.virginmedia.com 993 / SSL smtp.virginmedia.com — 465 / SSL Virgin Media Mail app password
Moved to Junara imap.junara.com 993 / SSL/TLS smtp.junara.com — 465 / SSL/TLS Junara password, or an app-specific password if you have enabled that feature
Create the Outlook.com account you want to keep

Set up the destination first, then add that Microsoft account to Outlook for Windows.

Add the old mailbox to Outlook using IMAP

Microsoft supports adding third-party IMAP accounts in both new and classic Outlook. If automatic setup fails, use manual or advanced setup and enter the server details above.

Let the source mailbox fully synchronise

Do not start copying immediately after adding a large account. Wait for folders and older messages to appear. If the mailbox has already moved to Junara, Junara specifically recommends allowing the client to fully synchronise before exporting or backing up data.

Copy the messages you want into Outlook.com folders

With both accounts visible, select messages and use Outlook’s move/copy tools to place them in the Outlook.com mailbox. For a large archive, copy in batches and confirm each batch appears in the destination before continuing.

Import the contacts CSV into Outlook People

In Outlook or Outlook.com, open People, choose the contact-management import option, select the CSV and complete the import. Microsoft supports CSV contact imports.

Copy first, tidy later. Do not delete old messages just because they appear to have moved. Confirm the destination account contains the mail and attachments you need before cleaning up the source mailbox.

The part people forget: change the address on important accounts

Moving email messages does not update the address held by other companies. Virgin Media itself recommends changing essential accounts when moving away from its email service.

If you still use a Virgin Media-domain address as the sign-in email for My Virgin Media, also follow Virgin Media’s current account guidance for changing that login to a non-Virgin address where required.

The bottom line

The safest order is simple: create the new address, export your contacts, copy the mail you need, import the contacts, change important logins, then verify everything before the old mailbox disappears. The only extra complication in 2026 is checking whether your legacy Virgin Media address is still hosted by Virgin Media or has already moved to Junara.

Virgin Media email migration FAQs

Can I move my old Virgin Media emails to a completely new Gmail or Outlook address?

Yes. You can copy or import old messages and contacts into a new Gmail or Outlook.com account. Your new address does not need to match the old Virgin Media address.

Does Gmail still import Virgin Media email in 2026?

Yes, Gmail still offers a one-time import for compatible third-party accounts. What has changed is continuous POP fetching: Google says new Check mail from other accounts setups stopped being supported after Q1 2026, and existing configurations are due to end in January 2027.

What if my Virgin Media mailbox has already moved to Junara?

Use Junara’s current mail settings rather than the old Virgin Media server details. Junara supports IMAP and documents downloading mailbox data through IMAP-capable email clients such as Outlook.

Do my bank, shopping and streaming logins change automatically when I move email provider?

No. Moving messages and contacts does not update the email address registered with other organisations. Change important sign-in, contact and recovery addresses separately.

Can I move my ntlworld or Blueyonder address itself to Gmail or Outlook?

No. You can move the mailbox data to a new account, but the old Virgin Media-domain address itself is not transferred to Google or Microsoft. If retaining the old address matters, consider the Junara route instead.
