YouFibre Broadband Review October 2026: Is It Worth It?

The deal is still waiting for approval

YouFibre is still trading normally and taking new orders. Its own site now says more than 500,000 customers use the service, while the broadband itself continues to run mainly over the Netomnia XGS-PON network.

The bigger background story is the proposed £2bn acquisition of Substantial Group. Under the announced structure, nexfibre would acquire the Netomnia network business and Virgin Media O2 would acquire the YouFibre and brsk retail businesses for £150m.

That transaction has not completed as of 2 October 2026. The CMA referred it to a Phase 2 investigation on 1 July, the case remains open, and the current statutory deadline is 15 December 2026. The original deal announcement expected completion in Q3, so regulatory review has pushed the timetable beyond that initial expectation.

What does that mean if you are signing up? I would not treat the proposed sale as a reason to avoid YouFibre today. There is no announcement that current connections or contracts are being switched off, and the deal announcement says the YouFibre brand is intended to remain after completion. But the future owner of the retail business is not yet settled until the CMA process finishes.

Why YouFibre feels different from most big ISPs

YouFibre runs mainly over Netomnia's XGS-PON full-fibre network. The fibre goes all the way into the property, and the network is built with multi-gigabit capacity rather than relying on copper for the final stretch.

The benefit I care about most is not the 8Gbps headline. It is symmetry. Uploading work, backing up photos, sending large video files and hosting calls can be dramatically quicker than on packages where upload speed is only a small fraction of download speed.

Netomnia currently describes its network as serviceable to around 3 million premises and built across more than 100 UK towns and cities. That is substantial for an alternative network, but it is still nowhere near universal, so the postcode checker remains essential.

The standard hardware is a real strength

New YouFibre packages include Wi-Fi 7 hardware as standard, subject to availability. The regular YouFibre Hub is used for YOU 200, YOU 500, YOU 1000 and YOU 2000, while YOU 8000 gets the Hub Pro.

The Hub Pro adds tri-band Wi-Fi 7 with a 6GHz band and is the sensible match for the 8Gbps tier. For everyone else, I would start with the included Hub before paying for extra mesh hardware. My Chapel Allerton test showed why: the connection itself was excellent, but thick walls still reduced the upstairs Wi-Fi signal.

YouMesh boosters are available if your house has genuine dead spots. They are useful, but do not assume you need them before trying the included Wi-Fi 7 router in a sensible central position.

Chapel Allerton test

I’m in Chapel Allerton every few weeks, so I recently checked a friend’s YouFibre setup to see how the service performed in a normal home. They are on a gigabit plan, and the first thing that stood out was the install quality: the fibre entry point and ONT were tidy, unobtrusive and sensibly placed.

On a phone over Wi-Fi from the sofa, I saw more than 670Mbps in testing. That is not a guarantee for every home, because Wi-Fi depends heavily on router placement, device capability and walls, but it was still a very strong result. 4K streams started instantly, large downloads moved quickly and the connection felt responsive in everyday use.

What gigabit feels like in use

The biggest benefit is not the headline speed test number; it is the time you stop wasting. My friend works with large video files, and on their old connection, uploading could effectively take over the connection for ages. With symmetrical full fibre, big uploads finished in minutes rather than dominating the evening. Game updates on the PS5 also moved quickly, especially compared with older copper-based connections.

The only catch was the house itself. Like many older Leeds properties, it has thick walls, so the upstairs signal dropped compared with the room near the router. If you live in a larger home, a stone-built property or anywhere with awkward room layouts, budget for mesh coverage or consider YouMesh so the speed reaches the rooms where you actually use it.

My pick: YOU 1000 at £24/month

YOU 1000 is the plan I would choose. It is advertised at 900Mbps average download and upload, and it costs only £2 more than YOU 200 in the October offer. Unless your budget is extremely tight, that price gap makes the gigabit-class package much better value.

Current October packages

YOU 200 — £22/month: 200Mbps average wired download and upload. Plenty for a normal household, but awkwardly priced when YOU 1000 is only £2 more.

YOU 1000 — £24/month: 900Mbps average wired download and upload. This is the sweet spot for most people who want YouFibre.

YOU 2000 — £34.99/month: 1800Mbps average wired speeds. A power-user tier rather than a necessary upgrade for ordinary streaming and gaming.

YOU 8000 — £50/month: 7000Mbps average wired speeds and the Hub Pro. It is impressive, but most homes will not come close to using it properly without multi-gig wired networking and compatible devices.

After the minimum term: the October offer says your price moves to the then-current list price in YouFibre's Price Book, so do not assume today's promotional rate continues indefinitely.

CGNAT and Static IP

For ordinary browsing, streaming and gaming, YouFibre's standard CGNAT setup is unlikely to matter. It becomes important if you need inbound port forwarding, host services at home, remotely access CCTV or run certain VPN/server setups. A static IP add-on is available for customers who need a public IPv4 address.

Fast uploads are the real win

YouFibre's headline speeds are impressive, but I think the bigger advantage is that uploads keep pace with downloads on the main tiers. That matters every day if you work from home, sync large files, upload video, back up photos or have several people using the connection heavily at once.

My own test on a friend's gigabit connection in Chapel Allerton produced more than 670Mbps over Wi-Fi from the sofa. That is not a controlled lab test or a promise for every house, but it was enough to show that the underlying connection can feel genuinely fast in normal use.

Yes — with one technical caveat. Full fibre, strong upload bandwidth and fast downloads make YouFibre a very good gaming connection. Large patches and new-game downloads are where the speed is most obvious, while a wired connection should also give you a stable path to the router.

The caveat is CGNAT. Most console and PC players will be fine, but anyone who hosts servers, relies on inbound connections or has a specific NAT/port-forwarding requirement should check whether the static-IP option is appropriate before ordering.

• Price Match: YouFibre says it can match a cheaper qualifying provider offer based on the total cost across 24 months, subject to proof and its discretion.
• YouMesh: Wi-Fi 7 boosters can be added if the included Hub cannot cover a larger or awkward home. YOU 8000 uses the higher-spec YouMesh Pro option.
• YouPhone: VoIP home-phone packages currently start at £5/month, with £10 and £15 tiers adding broader inclusive calling.
• 24/7 online support: YouFibre's support material says online chat is available around the clock, with engineers arranged when remote troubleshooting is not enough.

I cannot get it: Availability is still the biggest weakness. YouFibre's value proposition is excellent, but only inside the Netomnia footprint.

I need simple public IPv4 networking: CGNAT is fine for ordinary homes, but advanced users should account for the static-IP requirement before switching.

I am buying 2Gbps or 8Gbps just for the number: Those tiers make sense only if your wired network, computers and workload can use them. For most households, YOU 1000 is the smarter spend.

I dislike ownership uncertainty: The proposed nexfibre/VMO2 acquisition remains under CMA review. It is not currently a service-continuity warning, but it does mean the long-term ownership picture is still changing.
