XGS-PON Technology

YouFibre operates on the Netomnia network, which utilises advanced XGS-PON technology. In simple terms, this is a modern standard of fibre optic transmission that allows for massive capacity. Many networks originally used GPON, while multi-gig services are commonly delivered using XGS-PON or similar upgrades. Netomnia’s network is XGS-PON-based and positioned for higher tiers.

The key difference for the end user is symmetry. Whether you are downloading a game or backing up your iPhone photos to the cloud, the speed remains consistently high in both directions.

YouFibre Hub

YouFibre now supplies its own Wi-Fi 7 routers for new installs. Most customers get the YouFibre Hub (dual-band), while the top tier uses the Hub Pro (tri-band, including 6GHz). Older installs may still have legacy hardware (e.g., Eero), depending on when and where the service was installed.

A Trip to Chapel Allerton

I'm there every few weeks but I recently headed over to a friend’s place in Chapel Allerton to see if their YouFibre setup was actually worth the hype and to do some speed tests. They are on the gigabit plan, and I have to say, the install was really tidy. The engineers did a great job hiding the ONT box in a corner.

We did a speed test on my phone and I was shocked to see over 670Mbps while sitting on the sofa. Usually, Wi-Fi cuts your speed in half, but this was still flying. Everything we did online felt instant. We were clicking through 4K videos and they just played straight away without that annoying little loading circle popping up.

What Gigabit Actually Feels Like

The best part isn't really the speed test numbers, it is just how much time you stop wasting. My friend works with big video files, and on their old connection, hitting "upload" meant they couldn't really do much with their internet for the next two hours. With this new symmetrical speed, those huge files were done in minutes. An update for Fortnite on his PS5 was done in a flash. It is a total game changer if you work from home or do a lot of gaming because you aren't constantly waiting for the progress bar to move.

The only catch we noticed was the house itself. It is one of those classic Leeds properties with thick stone walls, so the signal did lose a little bit of strength on the upper floor. If you are in an older or bigger house like that, it is definitely worth grabbing a mesh node or looking at the YouMesh option. It just ensures you actually get that massive speed in every room rather than just near the front door, still it was pretty good.

YouFibre Plans

YouFibre’s tiers vary by postcode, but typically start around 150–200Mbps and go up to YOU 8000 (up to 8Gbps). Common tiers include YOU 200 / 500 / 1000 / 2000 / 8000 (availability varies by area).

YOU 200: YOU 200 is often the entry fixed-price tier, and is well above typical UK broadband speeds.

YOU 1000: The sweet spot for value. You get roughly 900-1000Mbps speeds. This handles 4K streaming on multiple TVs, gaming, and working from home without breaking a sweat.

YOU 8000: The extreme option. They now offer an 8Gbps service in some areas. This is enterprise-grade speed for the home, really only necessary for enthusiasts running heavy servers or large scale creative studios.

Static IP Add-on

If you run a Plex server, CCTV system, or specific gaming servers, you might find the standard connection restrictive due to CGNAT. YouFibre allows you to add a Static IP. Static IP is an optional paid add-on (commonly listed at ~£5/month, but confirm the exact price during checkout as promos can change).

By The Numbers

The reliability of full fibre is superior to older copper networks. Because the signal travels as light, it is not susceptible to electrical interference or signal degradation over distance. Low latency is a key benefit of full fibre, but actual ping depends on the server/location and home setup. Expect low UK-server latency rather than a guaranteed sub-5ms figure.

Latency and Huge Patches

Full fibre is naturally a massive upgrade for gamers. The low latency means less lag in competitive shooters, and the gigabit download speeds mean 100GB+ patches download in minutes rather than hours. If you're wondering whether YouFibre is good for gaming, the raw speed and stability are undeniable. Just keep in mind that the standard CGNAT implementation might result in a 'Strict' NAT type on some consoles, which is why serious gamers often opt to pay the extra few pounds for a static IP address to avoid connectivity headaches.

YouFibre keeps the add-ons minimal to keep costs down, but there are a few useful options:

• YouMesh: For larger homes, you can add extra mesh nodes to ensure the Wi-Fi reaches the attic or the garden office.
• YouPhone: While they don't use copper lines, they offer a VoIP service so you can plug a handset into your router and keep your old home phone number.
• Static IP: As mentioned, vital for tech enthusiasts who need to access their home network from the outside world reliably.

Geographic Lottery: The biggest issue is simply getting it. Netomnia is building fast, but coverage is spotty. You might find your neighbours can get it but you can't.

Router Controls: The Eero router is great for most people, but power users might find the app-based controls a bit limiting compared to a traditional web-interface router where you can tweak every setting.

Netomnia & YouFibre

YouFibre operates as a retail brand that runs on Netomnia’s full-fibre network (within the wider Substantial Group). Netomnia has also been consolidating its retail branding (you can read the latest details on the BRSK and YouFibre merger here). As of 4 March 2026, this is no longer just “talks”: on 18 February 2026, nexfibre (backed by InfraVia, Liberty Global and Telefónica) announced an agreement to acquire Substantial Group (owner of Netomnia) for £2bn. As part of the structure, nexfibre will acquire the network/infrastructure, while Virgin Media O2 is set to buy the retail business (including YouFibre and brsk) for £150m. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and is expected to complete in Q3 2026.
