Does TalkTalk Use Openreach?

Does TalkTalk Use Openreach?

THE NETWORK EXPLAINED

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, TalkTalk uses Openreach. Openreach lists TalkTalk as one of the providers on its network, so if you are asking whether a TalkTalk broadband service can run over Openreach lines and fibre, the answer is definitely yes.

But that is not the whole picture any more. TalkTalk also sells some Full Fibre services over CityFibre, so the network underneath your TalkTalk package can change depending on your postcode and the deal available at your address.

TalkTalk and Openreach relationship explained

WHY THIS GETS CONFUSING

People mix up the broadband brand with the network behind it. TalkTalk is the company you order from, pay every month, and contact if something goes wrong. Openreach is one of the network operators that may sit underneath the service.

If you want the background properly explained, our guide to what the Openreach network is covers the difference between the company selling the package and the company maintaining the line.

WHAT THE OFFICIAL PAGES SHOW

The current evidence is pretty clear.

  • Openreach names TalkTalk directly: TalkTalk appears on Openreach's main provider list, which confirms it sells services on the Openreach network.
  • TalkTalk is also listed for Openreach Full Fibre: TalkTalk appears on Openreach's FTTP provider page too, so Openreach-based full fibre is very much part of the picture.
  • TalkTalk's own support pages mention Openreach engineers: TalkTalk says Openreach engineers are used for repairs and new lines, which is exactly what you would expect from a provider using Openreach infrastructure.

So if the question is simply whether TalkTalk uses Openreach, the answer is yes. That part is not really in doubt.

THE BIT PEOPLE MISS

TalkTalk is not really an Openreach-only provider now. It also has an official CityFibre partnership, and TalkTalk says its CityFibre-based Full Fibre service is already live in more than 100 towns and cities.

That changes the right way to answer this topic. Saying "TalkTalk uses Openreach" is accurate. Saying "TalkTalk only uses Openreach" is not accurate any more.

In plain terms, some TalkTalk customers will be on Openreach and some will be on CityFibre. The deciding factor is where you live and what TalkTalk can actually sell at your address.

WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY

If you are thinking about switching, the better question is not just "Does TalkTalk use Openreach?" It is "Which network will TalkTalk use at my property?"

That affects installation, available speeds and sometimes even the equipment setup inside the home. If you want a wider postcode-first view before choosing a provider, you can compare broadband across the UK by area and narrow things down based on what is actually available where you live.

And if you are specifically weighing up whether TalkTalk is worth it overall, our TalkTalk Broadband Review goes deeper on speeds, support, value and the trade-offs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DOES EVERY TALKTALK CUSTOMER USE OPENREACH?

No. TalkTalk does use Openreach, but some of its Full Fibre coverage also runs over CityFibre, so the network depends on the address.

IS TALKTALK BASICALLY AN OPENREACH PROVIDER?

TalkTalk is a real Openreach provider, yes, but it is not Openreach-only. That is the bit that often gets lost.

WILL OPENREACH EVER COME OUT FOR A TALKTALK LINE?

Yes. TalkTalk says it uses Openreach engineers for repairs and new line work, and some installs may involve an engineer visit too.

"With TalkTalk, the mistake is assuming the same network sits underneath every package everywhere in the country. Openreach is a big part of the story, but postcode-level availability matters because TalkTalk also sells full fibre over CityFibre in some areas."
